Tel Hai is a site that honors the Hula Valley’s pioneers in their attempts to defend their homes. The site was founded in 1916 by a group of Hashomer guards, who believed that Jews alone should be allowed to guard Jewish settlements.

When Tel Hai came under French rule after the First World War, Tel Hai and other settlements in the Galilee came under attack from the Arabs. Many Tel Hai members were killed, among them the guards’ commander. the settlement was abandoned and later re-settled once the fighting had died down, and since then it has become a focus of Israel tourism symbolizing heroism.

A ceremony takes place annually to commemorate the guards at nearby Kfar Giladi. Today a museum reconstructs life at the settlement, and visitors can watch an audio-visual presentation about the battles.
