After assistance with border formalities, drive straight to Petra, a UNESCO world Heritage site, the astonishing rose-red city built by the Nabateans (an early Arab tribe). Petra is renowned for its massive architecture, pools, dams and water channels. The visit begins with the possibility of a short horseback riding for about 700m until the entrance of the Siq, which is about 1.2 km long (walking distance). Petra is famous for its huge monuments such as the treasury, royal tombs, the court, Roman theatre, Roman street, Qasr al-Bint (Palace of Pharaoh’s daughter) and many other smaller fascinating monuments. The city itself is almost 45 km² and is considered to be the second wonder of the world. After the visit, time for lunch in a nearby restaurant. After lunch, drive back to border. On the way, a short visit to Aqaba with the possibility to stop and take a walk around. Transfer to the border at around 18:00 and cross back to Eilat.

Continue to Mount Zion to discover the captivating King David’s Tomb, Room of the Last Supper, and the Dormition Abbey. As you enter the Old City, meander through the Armenian and Jewish quarters until you arrive at the Cardo, a historical Roman road that has been recently excavated and restored. Do not forget to marvel at the Wailing Wall, also known as The Kotel,before venturing towards the Christian quarter. While there, traverse the Via Dolorosa and explore the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Next, embark on a leisurely drive through the Judean desert until you reach the Dead Sea, which is recognized as the lowest point on earth. Take a break at one of the resorts for roughly 1.5 hours where you can experience the extraordinary sensation of floating on the Dead Sea and indulge in the therapeutic mineral-rich mud. Visit some of the most amazing sites in Israel

The Via Dolorosa, or “Way of Suffering”, is a path in the Old City of Jerusalem believed to trace the route Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion. Pilgrims and tourists walk this historic path, marked by the Stations of the Cross, which commemorate significant events from Jesus’ final hours. Along the route, visitors can explore various religious sites, including churches and chapels, each holding deep historical and spiritual meaning. The Via Dolorosa offers a unique opportunity for reflection and understanding of the events that shaped Christianity.
The traditional route

The traditional route starts just inside Lion’s Gate, or St Stephan’s Gate, close to the location of the former Antonia Fortress. The first and second stations commemorate Jesus’s encounter with Pontius Pilate where there are three churches, the Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross, Church of the Flagellation and Church of Ecco Homo. Next to the Church of the Ecco Homo is an arch built by Hadrian. Subsequent stations are said to represent the times Jesus stumbled on his way to the place of crucifixion. The first fall is represented by the third station where the Polish Catholic Chapel resides. The second fall is represented by the seventh station at a crossroads, adjacent to the Franciscan chapel, while the third fall is the ninth station located at the entrance to the Ethiopian Orthodox Monastery.

Other stations

Other stations of note include the point at which Jesus met his mother Mary, a station commemorating the place where Jesus met Veronica and a station where Jesus was said to have met with pious women.

Each Friday a Roman Catholic procession walks the route, headed by Franciscan monks, while there are also frequent re-enactments en-route, some of which are more professional than others. Israel tour operators will be able to identify the best days to visit.

Via Dolorosa

The Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem’s Old City is the historic path believed to trace Jesus' route to his crucifixion, marked by the Stations of the Cross and significant religious sites.

A Jerusalem tour simply wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Jewish Quarter in the Old City. The walled Old City is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with the Jewish quarter situated to the southeast corner. In 1948, the Old City was occupied by Jordon and most of the ancient buildings were destroyed. In 1967, however, when Israel regained control of the Old City, the remains were excavated and buildings reconstructed.

The Hurva Synagogue which dominated the skyline prior to its destruction in 1948 was not initially rebuilt because of disagreements. Instead, a commemorative arch was erected here and it was only in 2000 that work finally began on the reconstruction of the building - which was opened to the public in 2010. The Western Wall is located in the Jewish quarter, the remains of a temple wall built in the times of Herod. The Burnt House is the site of the remains of a house burnt down by the Romans in 70 AD. The house is also known as Katros House because of the inscription ‘bar katros’ which was discovered on weights in the house. The Cardo, or ‘Cardo Maximus’ is a Roman-Byzantine street featuring colonnades dating back to the sixth century AD. The Broad Wall is what remains of the thick city walls erected by Hizkiah at the time when the first temple existed, and visitors can see 45 meters of wall on display here.

The City of David
The City of David, named after King David, is the oldest settlement in Jerusalem. King David established the city 3000 years ago, in order to unify the tribes of Israel, and his son, Solomon, built the First Temple on the northern border. The area is home to many archeological sites of interest including an intact underground water system.



The Old City Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City, located in the southeast, was rebuilt after its destruction in 1948 and offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history following its restoration in 1967.

When visiting Israel, the Armenian Quarter is generally included on a tour. It covers a sixth of the area contained within the Old Walls. Some Christians believe it is the site of Mount Zion and one of the gates of the Old City to the southern end of the quarter is called Zion Gate. A large section of the Armenian Quarter is occupied by an Armenian Monastery, while there are also a number of churches situated here belonging to various Christian denominations which is why many Christian tours to Israel include this in the itinerary. The Syrian Orthodox church of St Marks is of particular interest and visitors are recommended to take in the spectacular views from the top of the Maronite Patriarchate. The Cathedral of St James is the largest Armenian Church in Israel.

The Armenian Museum is housed within a former Armenian Theological Seminary. The collections include archeological artifacts relating to the Armenian presence in Jerusalem including mosaic pavements and 1st century frescoes. The Gulbenkain Library contains rare manuscripts as does nearby St Toros Church.
